2010 Race Results Summary

All in all, 2010 was a very enjoyable and successful year of racing for the Green Mountain Sports racing team. For a team of about 20 racers, we came away with over 150 top ten finishes! This past year was also one of teamwork, growth, camaraderie and "personal bests."

We closed out 2010 with more than 20 wins and 55 podium placings. Here is a list of Green Mountain Sports racing team podium (top 3) finishes:

Cyclocross State Championships

The ACA State Championships for cyclocross took place at Monarch high school in Louisville, on Saturday and Sunday the 4th and 5th of December. Weather conditions were cool, the skies were mostly clear, and the predominantly grass course was dry as a bone. There were a couple of short rises, but for the most part, the course was flat and fast. A total of seven Green Mountain Sports racing team members raced over the weekend with the following results:

Brian Krombein finished in 14th place in the 35+ race.

Craig Hofer finished in 20th place in the 45+race.

Peter Lopez took 27th in the Cat. 3 race and 53rd in the 35+ race.

Pieter Schouten finished in 30th place in the 45+ race.

Ed Tokarski took 40th in the 35+ race.

Mike Schaub finished 49th in the 45+ race and 59th in the 35+/Cat. 4 race.

Blaine Haskell finished 66th in the 35+ race.

GMSV Lookout Cross #2 and Boulder CX #4:
A number of GMSR racers were out racing cross over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend here in Colorado. At Lookout Cross in Golden, we had Craig Hofer finish 7th, Brian Krombein 12th, Blaine Haskell 13th, Tim Miller 14th, Ed Tokarski 14th, Peter Lopez 15th and Pieter Schouten 15th. Then on Sunday, Peter Lopez took 14th at the fourth race in the Boulder CX series, which was held at the Westminster City Park.

Cyclo-X:
Sunday November 21st saw the ACA Colorado Cup series visit the Union Reservoir in Longmont for the Cyclo X cyclocross race. The all weather course at the reservoir had a bit of everything; fast grass, pavement, beachfront, and even a BMX track!

Ed Tokarski finished 14th in the 35+ field while Blaine Haskell finished 12th in the Single Speed competition.

Alpha Cross:
Race number 2 of the Alpha Cross series was on November 20th at the Arapahoe County Community Park in Centennial. The course was billed as a true "Euro style" course that traveled 90% over grass and had great flow. Brain Krombein led home all Green Mountain Sports racing team members with a 10th place finish in the 35+race.

Also racing 35+ was Ed Tokarski, who finished in 19th place.

Racing in the 35+/Cat.4 race were Chris Shamis and Todd Reisinger.

While Craig Hofer competed in the 45+ race.

New Belgium Cup:
Big time cyclocross racing came to the Front Range once again with the US Gran Prix of Cyclocross visiting Fort Collins on November 13th and 14th. The USGP of Cyclocross for 2010 is an 8 race series which travels to Madison, WI, Louisville, KY and Portland, OR in addition to Fort Collins. The USGP races around the country have been drawing the deepest, fastest and strongest fields anywhere in the US.

For the weekend's races, conditions were cold and muddy in Fort Collins, a welcome ? change from the warm and dry conditions earlier this Fall. Competing for the GMS racing team on Saturday were Craig Hofer who finished 15th and Mike Schaub who finished 54th in the 70 racer 45+ field. Ed Tokarski raced in the 60 racer Cat. 2/3 field, finishing in 20th place. Then, on Sunday, three GMSR racers competed in the 57 racer 45+ field with Craig Hofer finishing 17th, Mike Schaub 34th and Pieter Schouten 35th.

Castle Cross

ACA Cyclocross Race Results

Race Report:
The "Indian Summer" weather conditions on the Front Range continued all the way into November, and the running of the second annual Castle Cross Cyclocross race. The riders' ability to handle mud, snow and cold would have to wait for another weekend as Sunday's setting was sunny, dry, warm . . . and windy.

Race Director Ed Tokarski put on a great show for racers and fans alike. Racers enjoyed the twisty, flowing, undulating 1.5 mile course that snaked its way around the Rhyolite Bike Park. The race surface was smooth hardpack , which did get looser as the day progressed. Portions of the course traveled over the pump track at the park.

The course played into the hands of power riders with good bike handling skills, and called upon each racer's ability to master some short punchy climbs and wide-open wind swept sections. Portions of the course traveled through desert-like terrain, but it still was definitely Cyclocross racing!

Fans enjoyed the Castle Rock Brewery beer tent, tasty pulled-pork BBQ sandwiches, the expert commentary of race announcer Larry Grossman, and a number of excellent viewing areas on the course. Spectators cheered the racers on.

Sometimes passionately.

There was excellent competition in all of the racing categories.

One of the highlights was the last race of the day, the Singlespeed competition. The father and son duo of Russ and Brady Kappius battled it out at the front for the entire 45 minute race. At the finish line, dad Russ came around Brady to take the sprint for first place, but not by much!!!

NACT Weekend:
The North American Cyclocross Trophy (NACT) series visited the Boulder area during the weekend of October 30th and 31st, bringing in a top caliber national field of racers. Saturday's race was the Colorado Cross Classic at the Boulder Reservoir. There were huge fields battling it out on the 2.1 mile loop which traveled over grass, paved paths, roads and sand. We had a group of five racers at Colorado Cross competing in probably one of the most talented and deepest field of racers anywhere in the country.

Then on Sunday, racers came out for the Halloween Boulder Cup cross race at Flatirons Crossing Mall in Broomfield. It was another great day of cross racing which drew huge crowds of racers ranging from first-timers wearing costumes to the nation's best. The venue was held close to the Mall on a 1.8 mile loop with some steep run-ups and tight turns. Huge crowds and a festive atmosphere prevailed.

We had a strong contingent of Green Mountain Sports racing team members out there mixing it up over the weekend including Blaine Haskell, Craig Hofer, Peter Lopez, Chris Phenicie, Mike Schaub, Pieter Schouten, Ed Tokarski and John Wahl.

Boulder CX #3:
The third race of the Boulder Cyclocross series was held on Sunday, October 24th, on the grounds of the Louisville Rec. Center. Weather conditions were cool and dry, which made for fast and dusty racing conditions. There were two long run-up sections and some steep and rutted descents, giving racers a total body work-out on each lap. GMS racing team finishers included Craig Hofer, John Wahl, Ed Tokarski and Peter Lopez.

Blue Sky Cup at Xilinx:
Saturday, October 23rd, was the date for the Blue Sky Velo Colorado Cup cyclocross race at the Xilinx campus in Longmont. The course was a bit shorter than the earlier Cyclocross race held there, but it was well received by the 465 racers out for the day's race. It was a fast, dry and flowing course, which had two steep hills per lap. Besides the high caliber cross racing, the day's festivities included a visit from the Niwot High School marching band, Belgian Waffles and a rock band jamming on the back side of the course. Blue Sky Cup CX Open Race (10/23/10)

Green Mountain Sports racing team member finishes included Craig Hofer in 4th in the 45+ race, Chris Phenicie in 10th in Open, Peter Lopez and Blaine Haskell in 22nd and 36th respectively in the 35+ race, and John Wahl in 32nd in the 45+ race.

Aspen Lodge CX:
On Saturday October 17th, the ACA Colorado Cup cyclocross series visited Estes Park for the inaugural running of the Aspen Lodge cross race at the Aspen Lodge Resort and Conference Center. It was a very technical 1.3 mile long course with numerous off camber turns and bumpy surfaces. Racing at an altitude of 9,000 feet also added to the day's challenge. Craig Hofer led the GMS racing team with a hard fought 2nd place finish in the 45+ race.

Chris Phenicie battled it out with the top cross racers in the region to finish 12th in the Open race.

Other team finishes were Peter Lopez in 34th, Blaine Haskell in 35th and Mike Schaub in 37th.

Cross at the River:
The "Cross at the River" CX race took place on that special date, 10/10/10. The race promoters were offering special $10 primes for the 10th place finishers in the various races, as a special way to commemorate the day. They were also offering a unique cyclocross course that closely followed the Arkansas River, down in Buena Vista.

Green Mountain Sports racing team cross racers Craig Hofer, Peter Lopez, Chris Phenicie, Mike Schaub and Ed Tokarski reported back that the course was super fast in spots, the wind was super tough and the racing was great. Team highlights included a 3rd place finish by Craig in the 45+ race and a 6th place finish by Chris in the Open race.

Frisco Cross:
The Cyclocross circuit traveled to the high country during the first weekend of October for the 4th annual "Frisco Cross." Races were held on both Saturday and Sunday in Frisco, Colorado. The two different courses were both tough, with extended portions traveling over wood chips, numerous off-camber turns and the high elevation location of about 8,600 feet.

We had a great showing of racers out at Frisco over the weekend, ready for some Summit County cyclocross. Racing in the Open category was Chris Phenicie:

Boulder CX #1:
Another hot, dry and dusty weekend in Colorado for the duo of Cyclocross races on September 25th and 26th. No mud. No rain. No cold. No snow. . . . yet!

Saturday kicked off Race number 1 of the 5 race Boulder cyclocross series. It was held at the Xilinx facility near Longmont, and was very popular as there were almost 450 starters. Five racers, and team photographer Annette Hayden, were out there representing our team. Green Mountain Sports racing team member Tim Miller finished 11th in the Cat 4 race:

Pieter Schouten and Mike Schaub raced in the 45+ race with Pieter placing 27th and Mike finishing in 35th place:

Rod Yoder, who won the 45+ race, posted a video clip that he took of lap 1 of the race. Gives you a good feel for what racing cross is like (without the high heart rate). Check out the crash too!

In addition, Peter Lopez and Blaine Haskell competed in the 35+ race with Peter finishing in 24th and Blaine in 28th place:

Alpha Cross #1:
Sunday the 26th saw the ACA Cyclocross circuit pay a visit to the City of Centennial Civic Center grounds, and round 1 of "Alpha Cross." The race was put on by the Alpha Bicycle Team and included a whole host of categories and classes of racing action. Our team had three riders out there on this hot and sunny day. When the racing was completed, Craig Hofer took his second consecutive cyclocross win with a victory in the 45+ race! Finishing 5 places behind in 6th place was Pieter Schouten. Green Mountain Sports racing team's Ed Tokarski kicked-off his cross season with a 14th place finish in the 35+ race at Alpha Cross.

Pikes Peak Velo Cross:
The weekend of September 18th and 19th was another busy one with two area races. Saturday kicked things off with the Pikes Peak Velo Cross down in Colorado Springs. Hardcore crossers Blane Haskell and Mike Schaub made the trip south for some dry and dusty racing. Blane took a 3rd place in the 35+ race and Mike finished in 16th in the 45+ race.

GMSV Lookout Cross:
Then on Sunday September 19th, cyclocross came to the metro Denver area for the first time this season with the GMSV "Lookout Cross." Lots of racers were chomping at the bit to begin their season, as the race drew more than 425 starters in all of the various categories. Temperatures were steaming hot and so was the racing.

This was the season opener for most of the Green Mountain Sports racing team of ten riders. It was a great day of racing for the team with some members just shaking off the rust, some honing their form, and all enjoying the close-to-home cyclocross racing.

Speaking of mountain bikes, Craig Hofer won the 45+ race, competing on his full suspension mountain bike no less. Chris Phenicie also competed using his mountain bike and finished 5th in the Open race! Other finishes included Blaine Haskell in 18th, Peter Lopez in 20th, Pieter Schouten in 22nd, John Wahl in 25th, Todd Reisinger in 30th, Chris Shamis in 34th and Mike Schaub in 37th. (Racers were competing in various different categories).

Steamboat Cross:
The 2010 Colorado cyclocross season kicked off with the Steamboat Springs cyclocross races on September 11th. Tim Miller wins the prize as the first Green Mountain Sports racing team member to do a cross race this year, as he was there for the season opener. Tim finished in 2nd place in the 35/45+ Cat 4 race, a great way kick things off!

Copper Cross:
Then, on Sunday September 12th, Tim traveled to Copper Mountain for the Copper Cross race. Both Tim and Mike Schaub entered the "C" race at Copper representing the GMS racing team, with Tim finishing 4th and Mike finishing 14th.

Mike made the trip to Copper from Breckenridge where, earlier in the day, he completed the Fall Classic mountain bike stage race (and finished in first place no less). Mike did 4 races in two days over the weekend, 3 mountain bike races and 1 cross race!

Fall Classic MTB Stage Race:
The 9th and final stop in the Mountain States Cup series for endurance racers was the Fall Classic Stage race in Breckenridge, which took place on September 11th and 12th. The origin of this race dates back to the mid 1980's when the sport of mountain biking was just beginning.

Over the years, the small local Summit County mountain bike race grew to be the first mountain bike stage race in Colorado, and a key stop on various mountain bike race series schedules. Many of the sport's greats have competed in the Fall Classic including Tinker Juarez, Risi Grewal, Travis Brown and other mountain biking legends.

The 2010 edition of the Fall Classic consisted of three stages; a circuit race, a hill climb time trial, and a backcountry XC race. Organizers offered racers the opportunity to compete in any of the stages individually, or to do all three stages for the overall general classification competition.

Mike Schaub opted to do the whole enchilada and entered the Cat 2 50+ stage race. He was certainly up for the challenge as he finished 3rd in the circuit race, 1st in the hillclimb and 1st in the cross country race. Wow!

That resulted in a first place overall in the stage race for Mike. If that was not enough, shortly after finishing the XC race on Sunday, he headed over to Copper to compete in the Copper Cross later that afternoon.

Green Mountain Sports racing team member Pat D'Innocenzo chose to focus his efforts solely on the Fall Classic XC race on Sunday. The Pro and Cat 1 cross country race course was a tough one as it was more than 32 miles long. It included climbs with over 5,400 feet of elevation gain, a sizable creek crossing, nasty technical descents, and miles and miles of sweet singletrack. Pat finished on the podium in 2nd place in the Cat 1 (50+) XC race at the Fall Classic.

Winter Park Pursuit:
On Saturday September 4th, the Mountain States Cup series visited the Winter Park resort for the first time. The "Winter Park Pursuit" was the 8th race in the 2010 schedule, and included competitions for downhill, short track, super-D, dual slalom and cross country. GMS racing team's Ed Tokarski raced in the Cat 1 40-49 XC race and came away with a podium finish in 3rd. He completed the 25 mile course in slightly over 2 hours. Yea, that's fast!

Steamboat Springs Stage Race:
The second annual Steamboat Springs stage race took place over the labor day weekend of September 3rd through the 6th. This stage race included a Time trial, Circuit Race, Road Race and Criterium over the 4 days. It was quite successful last year and grew to be even more popular in this its second year because of its great courses, challenging terrain and strong community support.

Two Green Mountain Sports racing team members made the trip to Steamboat for the race; Brent Webb and Craig Hofer. Brent competed in the always tough 35+ category and finished in13th overall, highlighted by a 9th place finish in the Criterium. Craig finished in 5th place in the 45+ overall general classification, after taking 2nd in the Time Trial and coming in 4th in the Criterium and Road Race.

Pisgah Stage Race

GMS Racing Team member Ross Delaplane ventured out into the forests of western North Carolina to compete in the Pisgah MTB Stage Race from September 14 through 18. This race is in its second year and consists of 5 stages totaling 175 miles, with more than 40,000 feet of elevation gain.

The $20,000 cash payout attracted a stellar field of Male and Female endurance and XC mountain bikers. Race venues were in the Pisgah national forest which is located about 100 or so miles directly due west of Charlotte.

Ross finished the 5 day stage race in 2nd place in the Elite Masters 40+ category, with more than 18 hours of racing. Jeremiah Bishop took top honors in the Pro men's field and Amanda Carey won the Pro women's race. The race was covered by the Cyclingdirt website and they did a post-race interview with Ross!

Below is Ross' race report in his own words. Certainly a completely different type of mountain biking than what most of us do.

"Why would someone from altitude who prefers cold weather races of less than 2 hours head out to the Pisgah National Forest of North Carolina in the middle of an intense Indian summer to race mountain bikes for 5 consecutive days? . . . For fun!"

"I’ve wanted to experience the growing popularity of mtb stage racing, though I was still hoping it would cool off a bit. I wouldn't be heading out alone either, but with a buddy Ron from Virginia - a friend that I try to do a race with each year. For the first time in several years we would be racing the same category – at Pisgah this was the Elite 40+ class."

"The first stage was a straightforward 12K hillclimb in the Dupont National Forest - predominantly double-track and fireroad. Per usual, just getting to the start after flying in late the night before proved to be a challenge. After a few last minute phone calls for directions, we joined the group of 50+ racers for a le mans style start. Le Mans start? Hmmm, maybe my preferred choice of road shoes was not so great after all. After a good laugh, I jumped on my bike in near last place, but a short section of pavement helped me out and I was quickly up with the leaders. Up we go and the leaders are really getting after it. Into the woods, and now a dry creek bed/road for about a mile. Wow this is rocky - I really needed to get myself together - try to remember how to ride this rocky, ledgy stuff."

"Near the top I'm pretty sure I'm leading my class by a nice margin and start to cut the effort a bit in anticipation of the finish. Over the top and looking for the line then oops...time for some bonus single track. Super steep ups and downs (with some stairs and bridges), man this is hard, when is that finish gonna come, why is this taking so long? Should I start going hard again? After passing a few more intersections and course marshals I'm thinking I must be caught in some sort of endless loop, turn to head back up trail, now here comes the competition - idiot, why doubt yourself like that? Back racing on the trail but the followers close quick and they have the momentum. On the last super steep stretch to the finish Andy Johnston goes by and takes the leaders jersey by 7 secs. This is unfortunate, because I wouldn’t get this close to a stage win again."

"Stage two was the first of the Black Mountain venue stages. A convenient 10 minute bike ride from the hotel in an idyllic clearing in the Davidson River valley. On the way to sign-in for the 9am stage starts there would typically be a morning fog/mist that would quickly burn off as the sun climbed through the morning sky. Bang! and off we go for a quick pavement then fireroad start. The pace is really humming with Colby Pearce hitting the road hard, and Andy was quickly away with just a small group of pros on the fireroad. After 6 miles of climbing we were soon on one of the prime singletracks of the Pisgah National Forest – the Squirrel Gap trail. This trail was marked with dense rhododendron and minor technical challenges as it snaked in and out of the ravines coming down the mountain. This is my kind of riding and for most of the race I was having the most fun and made the most time on trails like this. Thanks to all the technical singletrack I would get within 15 seconds of Andy before he punches it to build up a 5 minute lead by the end."

"Stage three began with a quick 20 minute shuttle filled with laughter from fellow riders from Black Mt. over to Kukyendall Camp for the start. An interesting twist to this le mans start as each rider needed to execute either a somersault or cartwheel within a defined area – violators would be penalized. I chose a somersault and didn’t hear of any penalties being levied. We began with a big (12mile) fireroad climb then a descent down the infamous Farlow Gap trail. Once onto Farlow, I found myself riding a bit too aggressively, encouraged as I rode almost up to Andy Johnson who was walking the trickier sections. Turns out he was making the correct call as I went a bit out of control after riding a particularly outlandish section, almost cased a tree (would have been a hospital visit) and then burped a tire badly. Note to self, if Andy is walking there is probably a reason. A big shout-out to Drew Scharns, who came barreling into this section at a ridiculous rate of speed. Amazingly, neither bike nor rider were injured in the ensuing explosion. Much of the rest of stage 3 was followed by big fireroad ups and downs. For the first time the sun and humidity worked me over and I finished in rough shape after battling all day with Garth Prosser – the battle with Garth at least kept it fun and interesting. The clock told the story and after losing 16 minutes to Andy I was no longer legitimately racing for 1^st."

"Considering how I felt at the conclusion of stage 3 I was truly concerned heading into stage 4. The start was a brutal singletrack climb with a hike-a-bike to the top of Black Mountain right from the gun. The following 20 miles of singletrack were tailor made for me though – super punchy steep ups and downs along the top of a ridge and next to a remote river. The rhododendron was so tight in places it was actually hard to see due to the blockage of all sun and light. Lots of ridable log crossings and cyclocross style run-ups made for a fun time. I had a blast on this section of trail, and was loving all the cool shade. I got to tag along with Drew S. and Colby for some sections which gave it more of a racing feel. Unexpectedly, this was the longest stage on time due to all the singletrack and in last hour I gave back some time, but overall it was my favorite day."

"It got better at the after-stage evening festivities as the evening movie was about the Great Divide race and even 6-time winner Matt Lee showed up to talk about it a bit, and say hi to everyone. Needless to say, Matt is as cool in person as he comes across both online and in the movie."

"Only one stage to go and there was going to be no hiding the reality of how my legs felt riding over to the start – I was simply fried. I lined up in the very back for the first time in an effort to get the fullest draft on the opening 6 miles of pavement. Everything that wasn’t on pavement was tough going though, and I was actually concerned that I could lose a place if someone rose up and had a great day. Highlights of the day were riding in a 4 man pack of Elite 40+ guys (the first time we rode together all race) and racing down Pilot Rocks following Amanda Carey. I’ve never seen a woman descend something so brutally technical this fast. She remembered Green Mountain Sports from racing the Front Range 50 earlier in the year and had good things to say – keep up the good work guys and congrats to Amanda on another win. I crossed the line with a 5 day total time of 18:08:49 – my biggest weekly hour total for the year in just 5 days."

"Most people thought this was their favorite stage, but I was so out of it for most of the day that I can’t really remember too much. I even napped through the final podium presentation which was kind of a bummer – I guess Pisgah got the better of me in the end. The final post race party was a great time chatting with fellow racers and most everyone was happy to not have to race the following day!"

2010 Cyclocross Race Schedule

The cyclocross season is here and most team members have been into the shop (Green Mountain Sports) to either pick-up their new bike for the season or to update their existing bike. Corky and the great folks at Green Mountain Sports really know their cyclocross, as they have helped countless riders and racers get set-up for the sport.

The 2010-11 regional cyclocross race schedule has taken form. There is at least one race every weekend in September, October and November. Most weekends have two cyclocross races to choose from! There will now be additional cross races held in December and January. Cyclocross addicts should have no problem getting their "fix" of races this Fall and Winter.

Please note that the Green Mountain Sports Racing Team will be putting on the Castle Cross race on November 7th in Castle Rock. We are looking to build on the fun, challenging and successful races that we held in Castle Rock last year.

Winter Park -Tipperary Creek:
The 2010 "Epic Singletrack" mountain bike race series concluded on Saturday August 28th with the Tipperary Creek/King of the Rockies cross country race. The 25 mile long course, which travels from Fraser to Winter Park, is a racer favorite because it is run on some of the area's best trails. It brings the racers through lots of twisty singletrack, bomber descents, challenging climbs, and the standard assortment of streams, bridges,rocks, roots and trees.

Along with one of the best courses in the country, there was excellent weather on Saturday morning, drawing a crowd of more than 500 mountain bikers. The fields, top to bottom, were the largest and most competitive of all of the Winter Park races.

The Green Mountain Sports racing team was out in full force, with twelve racers competing in the Winter Park racing season's final race. Team photographer extraordinaire Annette Hayden was stationed at the Vasquez creek crossing, about 3/4 of the way through the course, and got some great shots of each racer's own unique way of navigating the creek crossing.

One way to get across was to portage the bike, displayed expertly by Chris Shamis:

Another way was to push the bike through, and let the others do their own thing off to the side, as shown by Marjie:

Another way to cross was to ride through the deep part of the creek (like Chris) while your competitor falls by the wayside:

Some, like Blaine, were able to ride smoothly across (without the distractions) on their big wheeled machine:

And others made it through employing their own unique "ride the top tube and paddle with your feet" hybrid style. Careful there Rob:

After everyone crossed the creek and the race was over, we celebrated the end of the race and the season. For the Tipperary Creek race, our team came away with 1 win, 4 top ten finishes and 11 finishers. Craig Hofer continued his winning ways, taking first place in the Expert Mens 45-49 race. Other top ten finishes included Marjie Tokarski in 4th, Ed Tokarski in 4th and Pat D'Innocenzo in 6th.

As the 2010 Winter Park race series concluded on Saturday afternoon, the overall season series results were tabulated. The season standings were calculated based upon each rider's best five finishes out of the seven races. Three Green Mountain Sports racing team members came out victorious in their category!!!

Ed Tokarski finished first in the Expert Men's 40-44 Category for the 2010 season.

Craig Hofer finished first in the Expert Men's 45-49 Category.

And, Mike Schaub finished first in the Sport Men's 50+ Category for the 2010 season.

Special thanks go out to Mike Schaub for serving as Team Captain at Winter Park. Mike helped make it a great season for all of us with his dedication and hard work!!

A number of other Green Mountain Sports racing team members finished the season at Winter Park in the top ten overall:

Road Racing News:
The ACA Colorado State Road championships for Masters and Juniors were held on Saturday August 28th in Deer Trail, CO. Separate races were held for 35+/4, 35+/ 3 and 35+/Open masters riders with the Cat 4's racing a total of 41 miles and the Cat 3's and up racing a total of 56 miles. Jim Hebert led the way for the Green Mountain sports racing team with an 8th place finish in the 35+/Cat 3 race. Ben Frost took 17th in the 35+/Cat 4 race and Brent Web finished 20th in the 35+/Cat 1-2/Open race.

The Green Mountain Sports racing team was out on Saturday August 21st for the Raisin Hope Classic, a fundraiser for the Raisin Hope Foundation and Craig Hospital. The races were held on the 1.7 mile long CSP loop in Golden under sunny skies and warm temperatures.

GMS racing team members raced in the Masters 45+ and 35+ races, and came away with two 4th place finishes. Craig Hofer continued his string of strong racing with a 4th place finish in the 45+ race.

Later in the day, Mitch Westall crossed the line with a hard fought 4th place finish in the highly competitive 35+ race. He was followed by Scott Hartley in 9th, Brent Webb in 30th, Chris Phenicie in 32nd and Craig Hofer in 34th.

Sunday August 15th was the day for the ACA Colorado State Senior Road Championships. The road races were held at the Air Force Academy on a hilly and scenic course. GMS racing team member finishes included Ben Frost in an impressive 4th place in the 35+ Cat 4 race, Jim Hebert placing 11th in the Cat 3 race and Dan Maduff finishing in 37th place in the Cat 4 race.

On Saturday, three GMS racing team members took part in the BRC Real Estate Criterium in Highlands Ranch. Scott Hartley finished 12th in the 35+ Open/Cat 1-2 race, Brent Webb finished 27th in the 35+ Cat 3 race and Ben Frost placed 12th in the 35+ Cat 4 race.

The Mike Nields Memorial Bannock Street Criterium race went off on Sunday August 8th. The course was a figure eight style 1-mile loop through the streets of Denver. With the great weather, there were large crowds of spectators as well as lots of racers in all of the various fields.

We had five racers from the Green Mountain Sports racing team out there for the Sunday Crit action. To kick things off for GMS racing, Craig Hofer won the Open 45+ race! Craig has been on a tear at both road and mountain bike racing of late. Way to go Craig.

Immediately following the 45+ race, Craig jumped back in the action and competed in the Open 35+ race. He was joined by three other teammates, racing in the 52 man field. GMS racing team finishes in the Open 35+ race included Scott Hartley in 12th, Craig Hofer in 18th, Chris Phenicie in 19th and Peter Lopez in 36th. Jim Hebert competed in the Cat 3 race and finished in 43rd place.

Winter Park - Mary Jane XC Race:
Race number 6 of the 2010 Winter Park mountain bike race series was held on Saturday August 14th. The weather was sunny, the skies were blue, the course was in tip top shape, and the Green Mountain Sports racing team was there for some rugged mountain bike racing.

This race was unique in that it started at the top of the mountain rather than at the base of the resort. The race course consisted of multiple laps of a 4 mile long circuit that included a steep fire road climb along with rocky, rooty and twisty singletrack at the high mountaintop elevation. After completing their circuits, racers headed downhill for 8 miles of (sometimes) hair raising descents. The course was tough on both racers and their equipment, as a fair number experienced either crashes or tire cuts, wheel failures and other mechanicals.

Our team had 10 racers finish the race. Racing in the Pro category was Chris Phenicie:

And, racing in the "Sport" category were Emma Atkins, Blaine Haskell, Bill Marcoux, Mike Schaub and Rob Tokarski:

It was an outstanding race for the team with 4 podium placings and 7 top ten finishes! Ed Tokarski, Craig Hofer and Mike Schaub came away with wins and Emma Atkins finished 3rd; while Marjie Tokarski, Bill Marcoux and Rob Tokarski also placed in the top ten. Winter Park served up yet another day of fun racing and great weather. The next (and final) race of the series will be on Saturday August 28th, the Tipperary Creek "King of the Rockies" XC race.

Colorado State Championships for XC:
On Saturday August 7th, the Keystone Ski resort hosted the USA Cycling Colorado State Mountain Bike Championships. The Championship races were a part of the Mountain States Cup "Keystone Revival" race weekend. The weekend's festivities included a whole host of XC, Super-D, Short Track and Downhill races.

The Pro and Cat 1 XC State Championship races consisted of two laps of a 10 mile loop which climbed to the summit of the mountain, and then descending back down over some of the same trails used for the Super-D. The course included 1,900 feet of climbing per lap (much of it on singletrack) and long, bumpy, twisty and challenging descents.

Pat D'Innocenzo was the sole member of the Green Mountain Sports racing team competing at Keystone and finished 2nd in the State Championship XC race (Category 1, 50+). For additional coverage of the State Championship races, click below:

CrankworX Colorado:
The month of July has been jam packed with big mountain bike races throughout Colorado, and that continued all the way to the last day of the month. On Saturday July 31st, the CrankworX Colorado mountain bike Cross Country (XC) race and expo was held at Winter Park. The mountain bike expo featured live music, vendor booths, food, drink, games and more.

Besides the Cross Country race, CrankworX Colorado included Downhill, Super-D and Slopeside Bike jumping and Bike trick competitions. All events drew high caliber competitors due to the prestige and notoriety of the CrankworX festival and the excellent courses. In addition, the Pro XC race offered a generous cash payout for the top ten finishers, which brought out lots of big names.

We had a contingent of 11 racers from the Green Mountain Sports racing team out there on Saturday. It was a great day for racing with warm temperatures and sunny skies. The XC course, which began in Fraser and finished at the Winter Park resort, was challenging indeed. It included healthy doses of high altitude climbing, lots of puddles and mud bogs from the recent rains, and some rocky and rooty descents. The course concluded with a super fun downhill section into the resort that served up lots of berms and jumps. This section gave the XC racers their own opportunity to be like the trick riders competing nearby at the CrankworX slopeside events.

Our crew of 11 finished the day with a strong showing which included 2 wins, 3 podium finishes and 8 top ten finishes. Ed Tokarski kicked things off with a win in the Expert 40-44 race, leading from start to finish. Ed makes it look easy, below.

And Craig Hofer also picked up a victory in the Expert 45-49 category, winning by more than 7 minutes.

Mike Schaub closed out the day with a podium finish as well. He took second place in the Sport 50+ race.

Chris Phenicie battled it out in a Pro field stacked with talent, and turned in the fastest time of all GMS racing team members.

Yea, the Green Mountain Sports racing team jerseys were out in full force. It was great that we are able to have such strong turnout because we garnered lots of exposure for our sponsors at this high visibility event.

Also of note was that all of our top finishers were using Schwalbe tires for the race, which speaks volumes to the grip, versatility, reliability and fast rolling characteristics of the Schwalbe line of mountain bike tires. The course was extremely demanding on tires with both muddy and dry sections, rooted and rocky sections, and steep uphill and downhill sections. All GMS racing team Podium finishers (and all GMS Pro & Expert racers) raced on Schwalbe Racing Ralph tires at CrankworX Colorado.

Road Racing News:
During the weekend of July 31st and August 1st, two GMS racing team members ventured down to Salida to race in the Salida Omnium. Ben Frost came home with a 3rd place overall finish in the 35+ Cat 4 race. He did that with a 2nd place finish in the Criterium on Saturday and a 6th place finish in the Road Race on Sunday. In addition, Jim Hebert put in a very strong showing in the Salida Omnium Cat 3 Road Race and finished in 5th place.

As one of the most prestigious races on the calendar, the Bob Cook Memorial Mt. Evans hill climb brings out hundreds of racers and athletes from all around the country. The 45th annual edition of the race, on Saturday July 24th, served as the ACA Colorado State hill climb championship. The course begins at the Clear Creek Middle School in Idaho Springs (altitude of 7,555 ft.) and ends 27.4 miles later at the summit of Mt. Evans (altitude of 14,130ft.) Over the years, many top professional and amateur racers have tested their fitness in this grueling race.

This year, two members of the Green Mountain Sports racing team were out there with the masses, Brent Webb and Jim Hebert. Brent Webb raced in the Open 35+ category and finished an impressive 7th, with a time of 2:10:50. Brent, below, with a look of concentration as he ascends the mountain.

Jim Hebert raced in the Cat. 3 race and finished in 18th place with a very fast time of 2:13:32 Jim, below, climbing like a pro.

Saturday July 17th was the date for the Colorado State (Age graded) Masters criterium championships. The championship races were held on a fast, technical, L-shaped course located in Prospect, CO. Two Green Mountain Sports racing team members did the race, with Scott Hartley finishing 17th in the Open 35+ race and Peter Lopez finishing 26th in the 35+ Cat 3 race.

On Sunday July 11th, over 100 professional and top level amateur racers lined up to compete for the ACA Colorado State Criterium Championships. The race, which was run on a six turn course in Longmont Colorado, attracted a large number of top level Pro Crit racers as well as Colorado's best amateur (Category 1 and 2) criterium specialists. The race was run under rainy conditions, making negotiating their way through each turn quite an adventure for the racers. Craig Hofer stayed upright and finished in 29th place in this high level race.

The Mike Horgan Hill Climb race was held on Saturday Morning, July 3rd. The race, from Bolder to Nederland, is run on a 17 mile long course which gains 3,400 feet of elevation. The last 7 miles of the race are on dirt roads and over 12 percent grades. Yea, it's a climbers delight. Three GMS racing team members put themselves to the test with Brent Webb leading the way with a 12th place finish in the Open 35+ race. Jim Hebert did the Cat 3 race and finished 21st, while Pieter Schouten competed in the 35+ Cat 4 race and finished in 12th position.

Cross Country MTB Nationals:
For the second consecutive year, the USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Championships took place here in Colorado at the Sol Vista resort. Races were held for Pros and all categories of Amateurs in Cross Country, Downhill, Mountain Cross, Short Track and Super-D, running from Thursday July 15th through Sunday July 18th. Attendance was good, and the racing action drew the best mountain biking talent from all around the country.

Green Mountain Sports racing team members raced in both the Category 1 and 2 XC races at Nationals. The Category 1 races consisted of two laps of an 8.9 mile circuit that was designed by Winter Park resident and long time Colorado racer, Keith Sanders. This year's course provided an all around test of mountain biking skills with plenty of climbing (1,700 ft per lap,) twisty singletrack, tough technical sections and fast downhills. The course for the Category 2 races was slightly shorter, with just a tad less climbing per loop.

Aaron Small led the way for the Green Mountain Sports racing team with a 3rd place finish in the Category 1 35-39 National Championship Cross Country race! This was his third podium placing at Nationals between this season and last:

MTB Marathon Nationals 2009 -3rd
MTB Marathon Nationals 2010 -3rd and
MTB XC Nationals 2010 -3rd

Ed Tokarski also competed at Nationals and finished in13th place in the Category 1 40-44 XC race. That follows his top 15 placing at Nationals in the Marathon race two weeks ago.

In the Category 2 championships, Pieter Schouten came away with a 4th place finish in the 40-44 XC race. Yea, that was a podium finish by Pieter, as medals are awarded to the top 5 finishers in National Championship races. This follows Pieter's 3rd place finish last month at the Missouri State Mountain Bike championships which were held in Ballwin, MO.

Other Mountain Bike Racing News:
The Breckenridge 100 endurance mountain bike race took place on Saturday July 17th. The race is one of seven on the NUE (National Ultra Endurance) series calendar and is generally regarded as the toughest 100 mile mountain bike race in the country. The race, and its sister races (the B-68 and the B-32,) drew about 375 mountain bike racers from all across the country.

GMS racing team member Pat D'Innocenzo raced in the shorter version of the Breck 100, the B-32. The B-32 race was run on a 32 mile loop over some of the best trails and singletrack in the Breckenridge area. The course included more than 4,600 vertical feet of climbing, screaming descents and lots of beautiful scenery. Pat won the Open 50+ race, and finished 4th overall out of 94 competitors in the B-32 race. Our team had no takers for the 68 or 100 mile races . . . this year.

GMSV Short Track:
The Green Mountain Sports Velo club mid-week MTB short track races were held each Tuesday evening in July, providing a great interval work-out. The short track races were ACA sanctioned and included categories for various ability levels. John Wahl and Mike Schaub sharpened up their racing form at the races throughout the month.

WP Valley Point-to-Point XC:
The third and fourth races of the Winter Park mountain bike race series were held on July 10 and 11. Saturday was the Valley Point-to-Point cross country race from the base of the ski resort out into the woods in Fraser. It’s a 23.5 mile long course for Pro/Expert/Sport riders and 18.8 miles for Beginners. It includes a number of shorter moderate grade climbs totaling 2,600 feet of elevation gain. It is a classic Winter Park course with large helpings of roots, trees, rocks, dirt roads, wooden bridges and of course, singletrack.

As the race went off, weather conditions were sunny, warm and humid. The course was dry, and the organizers mercifully had the racers bypass the deep creek crossing, allowing some to finish the race relatively mud free. Not everyone was so lucky though, because as the day progressed, the sky clouded over, it cooled off, and the rain began to fall. Almost all of the Pros and Experts finished before the rains came, but those who competed in the Sport and Beginner categories had to race in the pouring rain. Ya gotta love racing, you just never know what challenges may lie ahead.

As for the race, the Green Mountain Sports racing team had a great turnout, with 14 finishers. Our team closed out the day with 9 top ten finishes, 4 podium placings and 2 wins! Both Craig Hofer and Mike Schaub came away with wins!!

Craig finished first in the Expert Men's 45-49 race, winning by more than 3 minutes.

Mike motored away from the Sport Men's 50-59 field to win handily as well.

Pam Zients and Ed Tokarski carried over lots of fitness from completing the Firecracker 50 just 6 days ago to also finish on the podium. Pam took second place in the Beginner Women's 40-49 race.

And, Ed Tokarski finished third in the Expert Men's 40-44 race, even after crashing and scraping up his leg.

Winter Park Super-D:
Sunday was a new day, with sunny skies, warm temperatures and a Super-D race. The race was very popular, drawing 221 racers out to test their skills. The Super-D race begins with a LeMans style start where the racers have to run up to their bikes, mount them and begin racing.

The course is short, with most of it being downhill, but a few power uphills are thrown in to keep things honest. Todd Reisinger, pictured below, shows how it is done.

Team Green Mountain Sports Racing was well represented at the Super-D, with 10 riders competing. And like Saturday, we had a great day of racing, this time coming away with 4 podium finishes. On the Women’s side, Emma Atkins won the Sport Women's 30-39 race.

Not only did she win her category, but Emma also had the fastest time of all 43 women competing in the event!!! Yea, Emma was faster than all 3 Pros and all 12 Experts. It is safe to say that Emma crushed the course, and she has quite a knack for the Super-D!

Julie Pitrone also grabbed a podium spot with a second place finish in the Expert Women's 30-39 race.

Craig Hofer led the GMS racing team’s Men's contingent with a win in the Expert 45-49 race.

Yea, that was Craig’s second win in as many days. Craig went on to race in the Colorado State Pro/1-2 Criterium championships later in the afternoon in Longmont, and finished an impressive 29th. That was a State Championship race, against the Pros. Not bad for one weekend’s work; a Mountain bike XC win, a Mountain Bike Super-D win and a strong showing in a Pro Road Crit! Awesome.

To round out the successful weekend of racing, Mike Schaub won the Sport Men's 50+ Super-D race! Mike is a very strong Super-D racer, and he had to work hard to win this one by 10 seconds. But win it he did. Two days and two wins for Mike as well!

In the team competition, Green Mountain Sports Racing team A is sitting in 5th place, with 4 of the 7 races in the series completed. The next race in the Winter Park series will be the CrankworX XC race on Saturday July 31^st.

Firecracker 50:
On Sunday July 4^th, Breckenridge Colorado was bustling with the 10^th annual running of the Firecracker 50 endurance mountain bike race. All morning long, thousands of spectators and visitors were lining the streets, eagerly awaiting the 10am start of the Race, the Parade through town, and a whole host of other Independence Day activities.

Beginning with the 2007 edition, the Firecracker 50 has been the USA Cycling mountain bike marathon national championship race for both pro and amateur racers. The national championship race drawls the best endurance and cross country mountain bikers from throughout the country. In addition, the Firecracker also includes "non-championship" racing categories for other racers. All in all, there were more than 750 mountain bikers competing in the 50 mile race.

The race consists of two laps of a 25-mile long course through backcountry trails and fire roads around Breckenridge. Each lap includes about 5,400 feet of elevation gain spread over multiple long climbs, all at altitudes ranging from 9,500 to 11,500 feet. Besides the 10 to 20 percent grade climbs, the course includes 5 or 6 different high speed descents, some of which are extremely rocky, rutted and gnarly. The route also includes some of that great Colorado single track.

The racing action always begins fast and furious, with the roadies and the climbers pushing the pace on the opening 6 miles of the course, which are on roads and dirt roads that climb at an average of about 8 percent. Shortly after that, the course goes “backcountry” and the real mountain biking begins. Each year, about 25 percent of the starters don’t finish. and this year was no exception. The altitude, the distance and the punishing course take their toll on racers and their bikes alike.

Team Green Mountain Sports racing was well represented at the 2010 edition of the Firecracker with a contingent of ten racers, seven of whom were competing in national championship categories. Our team finished with one podium placing and three top 10 finishes in the national championships races. Not a bad day's work.

Aaron Small led the way with a podium placing in the Men's 35-39 national championship race, finishing 3rd. This was Aaron’s second consecutive 3rd place finish in the national championship race at the Firecracker.

Brian Krombein finished in 9th place in the USA Cycling Marathon National Championship 35-39 race.

And, Pat D'Innocenzo placed 10th in the 50-59 race.

Ed Tokarski finished in 13th position in the 40-49 category with a blistering time of 4 hours and 29 minutes. Jim Hebert also competed in the 40-49 national championship category and finished in 27th place.

In the two-person team competition, Marjie and Rob Tokarski finished on the podium (in 3rd place) in the Category 2/Sport Co-ed division. Their finishing time was only 15 seconds out of 2nd place. Marjie rode Lap 1 of the race:

Pam Zients FINISHED 7th in the Category2/Sport Women's 40-49 category. This is Pam’s first year of mountain bike racing, and she certainly continues to take on some big challenges.

Cross Country Super Loop:
Round two of the Epic Singletrack mountain bike series took place on Saturday June 26th, with the running of the XC Super Loop race at Winter Park. More than 525 racers were out there in beautiful weather, racing over an 18 mile long (Pro/Expert/Sport) cross country course.

The race course included a whole host of challenges . . . and rewards. Some of the challenges included moderately long fire road climbs, creek crossings, rocks, roots and lots of turns. The rewards were the great scenery, the diverse terrain and the fun downhills. By the end, some looked like they had enough of that great scenery.

But, back to the race report. For the day, the Green Mountain Sports racing team was out in full force with an awesome 16 racers finishing the race. We had a strong presence in many of the categories. Racing wise, it was unquestionably a very successful race for our team. GMS racing team "A" finished in third place in the team standings with 332 points, and sits in 5th place out of 36 teams after two races.

When it was all said and done, we ended the day with 9 top ten finishes, 5 podium placings and 2 wins. Wow!!! And, just as important, we finished with lots of racers with smiles on their faces after enjoying a great day of racing. Some of the highlights included:

Mike Schaub winning the Sport Men's 50+ race.

Emma Atkins won the Beginner Women's 30-39 race. Go Emma!

Craig Hofer, on his brand spanking new 29er, took 2nd place in the Expert Men's 45-49 race.

Ed Tokarski, on his relatively new 29er, finished 2nd in the Expert Men's 40-44 field.

And, Pam Zients finished in second place in the Women's Beginner 40-49 race.

What a great day of fun racing. The series resumes on July 10th with the Valley Point to Point Cross Country race which runs from Winter Park to Fraser.

Winter Park Hill Climb:
The opening race of the 2010 Winter Park mountain bike series was held on Saturday June 19th under sunny skies and warm temperatures.

This was a sharp contrast to the rainy, muddy and cold weather conditions one week earlier, when the series opener was originally scheduled to take place. The Green Mountain Sports racing team had a contingent of 8 racers taking part in the 5.2 mile race up the service roads for the mountain. The course gains more than 2,000 feet of elevation over the 5.2 miles, topping out at an altitude of 11,142 feet.

The team had a great showing with 5 top ten finishes and 2 racers finishing on the podium. Brian Krombein smoked the course with a time of 38:24 and finished in 3rd place in the Expert 35-39 field.

Along with that, Marjie Tokarski finished in 2nd place in the Expert 40-49 field of 13 racers.

All in all, it was a great day of racing and a strong start to the series for Green Mountain Sports racing. More to come next week at the Cross Country Superloop.

Other Racing News:
On Sunday June 20th Mitch Westall garnered a podium place at the Downtown Niwot Criterium, which is one of the select ACA BAR/BAT races of the season. Mitch finished in second place in the Open 35+ race (Cat. 1/2/3). Way to go Mitch!

Congratulations to Aaron Small for his podium finish at the Chile Challenge mountain bike race, which was held in Angel Fire, NM on Saturday June 5th. Aaron finished in 3rd place in the Category 1 30-39 cross country race of this prestigious Mountain States Cup event.

June 12th saw cold temperatures, heavy rain and muddy conditions for both the Winter Park Hill Climb and the Yeti Beti Bike Bash races, causing both races to be rescheduled. The Winter Park Hill Climb was held on Saturday June 19th and the Beti Bike Bash will take place on Sunday August 1st.

Also on the Mountain Bike racing front, the Front Range MTB short track series has been cut short. The two races that were to be held on June 19th and July 3rd are canceled. The series awards and prizes will still be given out, and will be based on results from the 4 races that did take place.

Denver's City Park hosted the annual running of the City Park Criterium, held under sunny skies and warm temperatures on Sunday June 6th. Scott Hartley finished 9th and Craig Hofer finished 11th in the Open 35+race, while Peter Lopez finished in 19th place in the 35+ Cat 3 race. Here are some great shots of the racing action.

Teva Games:
The Teva Mountain games are a huge happening in Vail with Food, Art, Music and of course Sporting events. As a part of the games, there were a number of cycling races including both road and mountain bike. Two of our racers ventured out to Vail to compete in the Cross Country mountain bike races, Emma Atkins and Mitch Westall. Emma competed in her first mountain bike race, taking 2nd place in a field of 25 racers. What a debut! Here is a brief race report from Emma:

"So I finally made it to my first mountain bike race ever at the Teva Mountain Games in Vail, ONLY because Corky and the boys at Green Mountain Sports squeezed my bike into their already busy schedule to tweak some loose bits and bobs on my bike. Just want to thank them all for being so great over at the shop."

"I ended up racing in the womens beginner class with 24 other fantastic women over some amazing trails and hills climbs !!!! Considering I lived in Vail for 10 years, it is surprising that I have never once mountain biked on the trails. I had a great time racing. I finished the race in 2nd place, with a huge smile on my face and ready to go out and have some more fun racing this summer. Thank you all for the support and friendships that I have made. You rock!" :)

Mitch Westall also raced, competing in the Expert cross country race and finished in 19th place in a stacked field of 70 racers! On the road side, Brent Web competed in the Vail Pass uphill time trial, finishing 4th in the 17 racer field. Congratulations to all three racers for representing our team in such a stellar fashion.

Road Racing Action:
Six Green Mountain Sports racing team members spent parts of the Memorial Day weekend participating in the Superior Morgul Classic. The race was set-up as an omnium with points awarded for three stages; Street sprints, a Criterium and the Morgul Bismark road race.

The road race traveled over the same course as some of the Coors Classic professional stage races from back in the 1980s. It was a tough and selective race, to say the least!

Craig Hofer finished in 8th place in the Omnium with a 7th place finish in the Street sprints, a 16th place finish in the Crit. and an 18th place finish in the Road Race. In the Morgul Bismark road race, Ben Frost finished in 13th place, Chris Phenicie 15th, Brent Webb 21st, Jim Hebert 35th and Pieter Schouten in 47th place.

Earlier in the month, on Saturday May 22nd, four members of the Green Mountain Sports Racing Team ventured out to do the 78 mile long Hugo Road Race. Team member finishes included Jim Hebert in 11th, Brent Webb in 14th, Mitch Westall in 16th and Dan Maduff in 27th.

Sunday of the prior weekend, May 16th, was the running of the 58 mile long Deer Trail road race. The GMS racing team fared well, with Mitch Westall finishing 6th, Brian Krombein finishing 10th and Brent Webb finishing 19th in the Open 35+ field. Jim Hebert finished the Cat 3 race in 21st place while Craig Hofer finished 4th in the Open 45+ race.

On Saturday, May15th, Brent Webb was the sole Green Mountain Sports racing team member to venture out to do the Sunshine Hill Climb in Boulder. The course was 9.4 miles of uphill, with about 3,200 feet of elevation gain. To add to the challenge, the ending portion of the course was muddy and wet! Brent finished the race in 8th place in the Open 35+ category.

The Green Mountain Sports Racing team began the month of May with the Lookout Mountain Hillclimb, a familiar road to some of our racers who train there often. This year, GMS Racing had two racers competing in the ACA race on May 1st. Brent Webb finished the race in 20 minutes and 1 second, good for 7th place in the highly competitive 35+ Open category.

Front Range MTB Series:
Short track MTB racing arrived in the Denver metro area with the running of the ACA sanctioned Front Range mountain bike race series. Races were (or will be) held in Lakewood, Golden and Louisville. On Sunday May 23rd, the third race of the series took place in Louisville. Pieter Schouten finished in 6th place in the C race, Mike Schaub took 9th in the B race and Bruce Chesy finished 7th in the A race.

Chalk Creek Stampede:
On Sunday, May16th, four GMS racing team members headed out to "the ranch" in Nathrop to race in the Chalk Creek Stampede XC race. This was the second race of the Mountain States Cup series and also a qualifying race for nationals. The weather was gorgeous, as was the scenery.

In the Category 1 race, Chris Phenicie absolutely crushed the course, finishing in 2nd place just millimeters out of first. Ed Tokarski also had a very strong race, finishing 12th.

Mike Schaub narrowly missed a podium spot with his 4th place finish in the Category 2 race. Dan Maduff placed 19th in the highly competitive Cat 2 30-39 race.

Updated Race Schedules:
The 2010 Mountain Bike, Cyclocross and Road racing schedules were updated to reflect new race additions, race cancellations and date changes. Two mid-week race series were added to the Mountain bike calendar; the CU Boulder Short Track race series on Wednesday evenings from May through August and the Summit Mountain Challenge Wednesday evening XC race series in Breckenridge. There were a few new races added to the Cyclocross calendar as well as some date changes. In addition, there were some minor changes to the Road calendar since early May. All three race schedules are up to date as of 5/16/2010.

Battle the Bear/Front Range 50:
On Saturday May 8th, mountain bike racing came to Lakewood, with the running of the Battle the Bear (XC) and Front Range 50 (Endurance) races at Bear Creek Lake Park. The race venue is basically our "home court" for mountain biking, located very close to the Green Mountain Sports shop. Conditions were perfect for racing; 55 to 60 degrees and sunny along with a fast hardpack course which was in excellent shape.

The day's festivities began with the running of the Front Range 50 race which consisted of 5 laps of a 10 mile long rolling course. There were about 300 racers who finished the Front Range 50 race this year, a 35% increase over 2009! The course was extremely crowded, making passing skills very important.

The Green Mountain Sports racing team had a strong showing with four racers completing the sufferfest, highlighted by Chris Phenicie's 2nd place finish in the (81 racer) Open 40-49 field. In addition, believe it or not, Pam Zients completed the Front Range 50 as her FIRST mountain bike race ever!! She finished and finished strong. Yea, that's right, 50 miles and over 4 hours in the saddle . . . welcome to mountain bike racing, Pam!

Later in the day, the Battle the Bear cross country races were held (concurrently on the same course). Again, the GMS racing team had a strong showing with four racers competing in the XC races. Dan Maduff finished 4th in his first mountain bike race ever! In addition, Ben Frost took 4th in the Sport 30-39 race and Craig Hofer finished 4th in the Expert 40-49 race.

All eight GMS Racing team racers who were out there were very thankful for all of the mechanical support, cheering and bottle hand-ups from Corky Grimm, Michele Phenicie, Emma Atkins and everyone else at the Green Mountain Sports tent. We also really appreciate the great photos that Annette Hayden took during the race.

On the Comeback Trail:
Marjie Tokarski had finished with the Valley Point to Point race at Winter Park on Saturday July 11th of 2009. She was riding back to the car when an innocent crossing of wheels resulted in a fall on the bike path from Fraser to Winter Park. Although it was a low speed crash, the damage was serious, a fractured pelvis.

After an extensive recovery process, Marjie eventually had to make the decision whether or not to ride again, and then later whether or not to race again. She chose to keep on racing, and here is her race report from her first race since July of 2009.

"I entered the Fruita race just to see if I could race again. No expectations. I suppose one of the key factors was getting there to preride on Saturday. There were definitely some things I knew I could not ride, given my new fear of falling, so I did what I could mentally. I have always had a fear of falling , but now I know how much even a small fall can hurt. I am not known for my downhill ability."

"The 18 mile loop was not particularly hard or technical. It was actually FUN. Rocky, sandy, fast, and yes I did lift my head up to view the Colorado landscape, and what nature has created for us to see over the years. I was passed at about mile 5-6 and never saw the girl who won the race again. I knew I was in second place, and the third place rider was behind me the whole time so I just kept pushing to the end. It helps to know who your competition is and I saw her back there every switchback and turn. Other than that I was glad that I was near the end, knowing I did not go down and gave it all I had. It was funny, at the end of the race another Winter Park racer came up and congratulated me and said, I guess you're back!"

The mountain bike racing season kicked off on the weekend of April 25th and 26th with the Rabbit Vally Rally Time Trial and XC races held in Fruita. These races were the opener for the Mountain states cup series, which runs through September. Congratulations Marjie Tokarski on her 2nd place finish in the XC race on Sunday. See Marjie's race report above.

There also was the Groove Subaru road criterium this weekend, which three Green Mountain Sports Racing team members took part in. Saturday April 17th saw two Green Mountain Sports racing team members taking part in the second installment of the Front Range MTB race series. The short track race was held in Golden on what looked to be an undulating hardpack mountain bike course. To take a look at race photos from Annette, click here. On Sunday the 18th, a contingent of four Green Mountain Sports racing team members were out there at the Louisville Criterium. Some were testing their racing legs for the first time since last year. The GMS racing team finished the day with a solid showing in both the 35+ and 45+ races.

Five members of the GMS Racing team took part in the recent Boulder Roubaix road race on Sunday the 11th of April. The racing action was fast and furious over an 18.7 mile loop, with more than 50 percent of the circuit being over unpaved dirt road. Racers completed anywhere from two to four laps. Tough!

The first ACA road race of the season was held on April 3rd, and it was a classic. The Koppenberg Circuit race. More than 400 racers were out there giving it a go in sunny but windy conditions. The course was dry but challenging as ever, with 2.5 miles of dirt road and 15+ percent gradient climbs. Somewhere around 300 racers finished, including 4 from the GMS racing team.

Also happening was a Mountain Bike training race, held at Bear Creek Lake Park. It is quite a rarity to have mountain bike racing in early April in Colorado, but mother nature cooperated with dry trails and clear skies. Super high winds were a major factor in the race though. Although no Green Mountain Sports racing team members took part, there were about 170 racers out there mixing it up, including a handful of top national and international level pros.

The 2010 regional mountain bike race calendar is now pretty much all set. Dates for Winter Park, Mountain States Cup, Nationals and other key races have all been published, so choose some races and get out and race!

Race promoters are offering a wide array of challenging races this year. Looks like it will be a busy Spring and Summer for many of us.

As the weather has turned warmer and the days are longer, we welcome the arrival of the 2010 road racing season here in Colorado. The season is now in full swing.

The Team

The Green Mountain Sports Racing Team is based out of Lakewood, Colorado with racers who compete in Mountain bike, Cyclocross and Road bike races year round. The team is the racing division of the longstanding Green Mountain Sports Velo Club. There are approximately 25 racers on the team, all of whom have a passion for cycling and racing.

Team members are well respected throughout the community and the state, as they are committed to both good sportsmanship and excellent results. During 2009, the Green Mountain Sports Racing Team and Velo Club participated in races throughout the region, garnering more than a hundred podium finishes.

Most racers on the team compete at either the Pro, Category 1/Expert or Category 2/Sport levels in mountain bike races, and at the Category 1 through 4 levels in cyclocross or road bike races.

The Green Mountain Sports Racing team focuses on top-level events throughout the state and the region. During the 2009 season, you could find the team well represented at the following races:

USA Cycling Mountain Bike Marathon national championships. There were more than 750 participants, and the race was viewed by thousands of spectators as it was held in conjunction with the July 4th parade in Breckenridge, Colorado. The race received extensive coverage among cycling magazines, websites and other media.

USA Cycling Mountain Bike national championships for Cross country (XC), Short track, Super-D and Downhill. These races, held in Granby, Colorado, drew U.S. Olympic team mountain bikers and the best professionals and amateurs from around the country.

American Cycling Association Colorado cyclocross state championship races for pros and amateurs which were held in Arvada, Colorado.

American Cycling Association Colorado road and criterium state championships races in Salida and Longmont Colorado.

The Winter Park Mountain Bike race series which drew from 450 to 600 racers per event, including U.S. Olympic team members and top professional and amateur racers from throughout the region.

The 2009 season was hugely successful for the Green Mountain Sports Racing team. Combined, the Green Mountain Sports racing team and velo club finished the year with more than 40 wins and 100 podium placings!! The team's success spanned across mountain bike, cyclocross and road bike races.

Mountain Bike:

50 podium finishes (top 3)
15 wins
5 National championships podium finishers
2 National champions

Cyclocross:

35 podium finishes (top 3)
20 wins
1 State champion

Road Bike:

15 podium finishes (top 3)
6 wins
1 State champion

There are few, if any, regional teams that can match the team’s 2009 results portfolio. But, the team in not all about winning every race. The Green Mountain Sports racing team is also comprised of racers aiming to exceed their "personal bests" while growing and developing within the sport of cycling.
